AGITATE AGAINST/FOR: campaign for something, argue strongly against
something. The workers were agitating for better wages.
ARGUE FOR/AGAINST:agrue that something be done or not done. They
argued against the further extension of time to the contractor.
CLAMOUR AGAINST/FOR: make a loud protest. People clamoured for
reduction in water charges.
COMPETE AGAINST/WITH:attempt to win by defeating others. He competed
with ten others for  the pose.
COMPLAIN AGAINST/TO: report dissatisfaction, make a protest. There
were many complaints against the official.
CONSPIRE WITH/ AGAINST:collude, to plot something harmful and
dangerous. He conspired with the enemy against the country.
INDEMNITY AGAINST/FOR: promise to pay the damage or loss. The goods
were properly indemnified against damages.
LASH AGAINST/DOWN/ACROSS:to hit violently. The waves lashed against the rocks.
LEGISLATE AGAINST/FOR/ON:to make a law about something. They are
thinking to legislate against flight by night operators.
LICK AT/AGAINST:touch with a quick movement. The flood water began to
lick at the houses.
POUND AGAINST/ON:to hig again and again making a loud noise. The angry
waves pounded against the shore.
RAGE AT/AGAINST:to feel very angry. Martha raged against exploitation
of woman. He always raged at injutise.
SCRAPE AGAINST/DOWN: rub against a surface. She scrapped down my back
with her nails.
